Here I stand in a crowd of twenty-five

Confused, my eyes wander from hither to thither

But can’t move away, from a pair of almond-shaped brown eyes

Dumbfounded I stand, without realizing that I have been staring for a bit too long

Almost when I start to turn, those eyes focus on me

As if enquiring, the purpose of my trespassing

Unsure of how to respond, I just smile

Confident I was that a slap would greet me

But instead, I was greeted with a smile

Hesitant as I was, I took a tiny step forward

Taking the cue, she moved away from her group

Emboldened by this move, I took another step forward

But unlike my pace, my heart was racing

The next thing I know, we stand facing each other

That’s when I realize how good her hair smells

With the smell of a beautiful spring morning dominating my senses

I forget all the languages that I’d ever learnt

Understanding my dilemma, she says “hi”

That monosyllable was like the best thing that I had ever heard

Suddenly my memory starts cooperating

Still, under her spell, I try to respond

What happened after, is all a haze

But after all these years, I still forget myself

When held by her gaze.
